An Architect Looks at Downtown Portland

Richard Ritz was an architect, writer, and architectural historian, who began his long career working in the office of renowned Portland architect Pietro Belluschi. An Architect Looks at Downtown Portland is a collection of Ritz’ columns first printed in the 1980s by the Portland Chapter of the American Institute of Architects in their publication Architalk. The book is packed with images of downtown buildings from the cast-iron era to some of the more recent skyscrapers, and including buildings that have long-since been demolished.

Portland Architectural History The Bosco-Milligan Foundation recently acquired copies of this 1991 book by Mr. Ritz, the late author of Architects of Oregon, and are offering them for only $12 with shipping & handling, or you can pick them up at the AHC for $10.

New Market Theater

In 1984, following the celebrated restoration and reopening of the historic New Market Theater building, Bill Hawkins, architect and Foundation Advisor, published a small book on the history of the theater building (constructed in 1872 at First & Ankeny) and its environment in Skidmore/Old Town.

Complete with a history of the 19th century theater operation, floor plans and photos, the book ends with the restoration of one of Portland's most important historic structures. 64 pages.

Jackson Tower Poster

The Jackson Tower first graced Portland’s skyline in 1912 at its prominent Broadway and Yamhill intersection when it was the home of the Oregon Journal.

This classic rendering was drawn by Francis McBride, watercolor by Wayne Chin, with text provided by Bill Hawkins, FAIA forming a border to the building image. In subtle shades of blue, beige and rosey earthtones, it’s perfect for home or office!
