Aaron has illustrated the vast architectural treasures of Portland and several other West Coast cities. He has developed artistic Playing Cards for each of the cities he has drawn. Over 50 of his illustrations are on exhibit in our classroom gallery. In addition to the original drawings, decks of Illustrated Playing Cards of Portland, Seattle, Astoria, San Francisco and Vancouver, BC are available at the exhibit.
Join us for a special evening! Aaron will be bringing in new work for this second month of his exhibit and he will also set up a demonstration of the works he has been creating from other cities around the Northwest. At 7:30 pm, we will have a special presentation from Aaron. He will discuss his process for creating his art and what has inspired him to create these special decks of playing cards for our beautiful historic Pacific Northwest Cities. We’ll get a glimpse at the line sheets created for the printing process. He will have art and decks on hand from a variety of places.
My drawings of Portland celebrate the city’s history in architecture. As an archaeologist and technical illustrator, I have long had a passion for the language of buildings. Over a year ago, I began to illustrate important landmarks to be made into greeting cards and prints. Eventually I had over 100 images of Portland. I decided to showcase them as a deck of cards. Through this format, I am able to share my art with others in a uniquely interactive way.
Original drawings were sketched on location (often in the rain) in my sketchbook with a ball point pen and embellished at my studio without the aid of a photograph. My illustrative style is influenced by graphic novels, the Renaissance etchings of Durer, and Blue Period Picasso. William Morris and the Pre-Raphaelites have inspired my sense of design.
After a successful online fundraiser with Kickstarter.com and the ongoing support of the community, my art project has become my life. During 2011, I traveled to Astoria, Seattle, and Vancouver, BC to create a Pacific Northwest series of card decks. In 2012, I plan to draw other cities around the country and the world.
