National Register of Historic Places
Multiple Property Documentation Form entitled:
Portland's Eastside Historic & Architectural Resources: 1850-1938

Buckman's proposed historic district will be relying heavily on the material in this document. It includes a strong and detailed history of the inner east side of Portland, focusing primarily on the Buckman and Sunnyside neighborhoods. It also includes information of several common building types in the area and how they contribute to Portland's history.

What regulations would apply if the district were listed?

All buildings within historic districts are subject to historic review by the Bureau of Development Services (BDS) for exterior changes, including signage, windows, door placement, new construction, additions, demolition, etc. There are standard fees for historic reviews, depending on the type of changes proposed. No review is required for interior renovations beyond what would already be required in building permits. Basic maintenance and repairs may also be exempt from review. For questions about historic resource regulations, contact Bureau of Development Services staff: Tim Heron, (Senior City Planner, Land Use Services, BDS); 503-823-7726; tim.heron@portlandoregon.gov. The BDS Planning & Zoning Hotline: 503-823-7526 is also set up to answer specific questions from the public.

The Buckman Historic Association (BHA) is an all-volunteer group of neighbors and preservationists who are attempting to establish a National Register Historic District in an area that is roughly bounded by Burnside and Morrison Streets, and SE 12th and SE 20th Avenues.
