Documenting the old industrial sections of Portland is a passion of mine. I like to reflect on the architectural detail lovingly included in this working area. The mold of a window, a painted trim is the minimal and utilitarian acknowledgement of being part of the aesthetic. I am inspired by pattern. It creates a feeling of movement in seemingly still subjects. Like in the bridge structure with it’s interchanging light pattern and kaleidoscope perspective. My paintings capture a mood of time passing as well as present moments of reflection bringing attention to less-noticed things. My paintings begin with a grey study establishing the details of the scene. I then glaze layers of transparent color over the top. This allows me to work quickly adding and taking away value and color much like drawing. Creating a feeling of depth with paint caught in layers. |
