HISTORIC OPEN HOUSE PROGRAM DISCONTINUED IN 2010 Oregon’s Special Assessment on Historic Properties program offers a 10-year “freeze” of the property’s assessed value for buildings that will be significantly but appropriately rehabilitated and maintained. Dating from 1975, this program is the oldest of its kind in the country. The State Historic Preservation Office announced, in 2010, the discontinuation of their yearly Open House requirement for buildings taking advantage of the program. The agency cites issues with liability, security and insurance as reasons for the cancellation, as well as the small number of people who visited the buildings during the open houses. Although many of the owners of historic properties may be relieved not to open their buildings annually, others looked forward to the yearly chance to share with the public, and still may be willing to host an open house for groups, like the volunteers at the AHC. |
