Portland's stock of vintage buildings has changed dramatically over the twentieth century.  Buildings have fallen for many purposes, from the razing of multiple blocks for new developments and highways, to the loss of individual buildings in order to construct new ones. The evolution of Portland's architectural heritage is an old and continuing issue as the city changes over time.  After awhile, the memories of lost buildings, blocks, and neighborhoods begin to fade. Lost Portland, a visual tour of past and present, will revive those places for you!  Local history enthusiast and vintage photograph collector Don Nelson will share some of his vast collection of images of the past at Lost Portland, a slide program of many of the city's most significant buildings lost over time. Historic photographs will be paired with contemporary views of the same locales during this unprecedented opportunity to see some of Don's rare photographs, and get a sense of Portland's rich architectural past.

Lest you leave feeling too demoralized about what has been demolished, Don's presentation will be followed by slides of items salvaged by Foundation founders Jerry Bosco and Ben Milligan from particular buildings, and now preserved in the organization's collections. Stained glass windows, cast iron, light fixtures, doors, and plaster pieces are among the 40,000 square feet of building artifacts in the collections. You will enjoy this preview of what will be available for exhibition and research when the Architectural Heritage Center is open. Capacity is limited and pre-registration is required, so mail in your registration now!
